HTC Vive Pro

What HTC Presented at CES 2018

Yaroslav Kaplan
The Consumer Electronic Show is off and running in Las Vegas and HTC presented their new headset the Vive Pro with a high-resolution screen and built in headphones as well as a wireless adapter. The cost and release date are not yet known.

In this article we collected all the important information about the new device which is currently available.
The Vive Pro will not replace the regular Vive on the market. Both headsets will be sold simultaneously in 2018.

The new Vive Pro appears to be a logical continuation to the current model with a set of improvements. The screen can be moved farther away from your eyes for better viewing and the entire headset is mounted by a turn mechanism on the back of your head. The headphones are now part of the device. We saw a similar solution in the Deluxe Audio Strap, an accessory to the HTC Vive, sold separately for $ 100.

On the front side of the Vive Pro are two cameras which, according to HTC representatives, "open up the capabilities to AR", however no details about this exist.

The Vive Pro is equipped with two OLED displays with 1440×1600 on both eyes, which is 78% better than the regular Vive. According to this indicator the headset has caught up with the Samsung Odyssey on the Windows MR platform, which should not come as much of a surprise since Samsung manufactures the screens for HTC.

The first testers of the Vive Pro at the Las Vegas expo point out that the difference in display quality is indeed significant.

The build in headphones provide the necessary volume for a deeper immersion into VR. If necessary, both headphones are easily retracted, just like in the Deluxe Audio Strap mentioned above. In addition to this, there are buttons for manually adjusting the volume built into the left headphone.

Wireless adapter Vive
In 2017 TPCAST appeared on the market, which is a wireless adapter for HTC Vive from a third-party manufacturer. The native adapter uses a different technology from Intel, but solves the exact same problem i.e. alleviate the user from wires while in VR. We know that the device will be in stores in the third quarter of 2018.

The main deciding factor in competing with TPCAST will be the price and the lack of delays in relaying data.

HTC also unveiled a renewed platform called Viveport. One of the main innovations is the Preview mode, where the user can test the VR experience offered free of charge before purchasing the content. A new subscription purchase model similar to iTunes or Spotify will appear later this year.

Also, the company announced a partnership with the video service Vimeo, which allow users to watch high quality 360-degree video on Vive headsets.

The screen resolution of the Vive Pro is the best on the market.
The native wireless adapter as well as updated content services propel HTC Vive Pro into industry leaders.
The HTC Vive Pro is a premium segment and certainly will not be cheap, which is why in 2018 users will be able to choose between a more accessible regular version and the Pro version.
